FRIENDSHIP - John L. Smith, 95, of 2395 Clark Road, passed away Saturday (March 9, 2013) in the Bath Veterans Administration Hospital following a brief illness.

Born Sept. 7, 1917, in Port Allegany, Pa., he was a son of George and Lottie Mowery Smith. He married the former Mary L. Lehman on Sept. 28, 1945, in Farmers Valley, Pa. Mrs. Smith survives.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 100th Division of the 398th Infantry regiment of the U.S. Army. Mr. Smith was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

He worked in the local oil fields and was a self-employed farmer in Richburg. He also was employed by Clark Brothers Corp., Olean, for 23 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Kenyon Andrus Post 772 American Legion, Bolivar.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Ervin (Monica) Smith of Bolivar, Duane (Linda) Smith of Cuba, Craig Smith of Richburg and Kenneth Smith of West Clarksville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy (Hilda) Smith of Port Allegany, Pa.

He was preceded in death by six sisters, Viola Redington, Marie Bickford, Flossie Bosworth, Billie Chandler, Lottie Borrum and Mary Ora Barbar; and three brothers, Carson Smith, Randall Smith and William Smith.

Friends may call at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar, on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday (March 14, 2013) at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Herne of the Heritage AFlame Ministries officiating. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
